Michele Gruenhage is a Canadian Certified Counsellor and Registered Clinical Counsellor with a Masters Degree in Counselling Psychology, who is passionate about helping people of all ages experience greater emotional wellness.
As a therapist, Michele manages to be both sensitive and direct. She is enthusiastic about understanding the client’s perspective, and uses a client-centered approach, which means the client sets his or her goals for therapy. When working with couples, Michele integrates Gottman Therapy into her overall approach. Michele sees each client as a unique individual shaped by his or her family and culture. We all belong to various cultures, whether that is our ethnic background, family culture, gender culture, sexual orientation, or religious culture etc. How these come together contributes to the wonderful uniqueness of every person.
Both adult and child clients come to Michele looking for help with moving through life transitions, reducing anxiety, depression, self-harming behaviours, and trauma responses. Many people suffer from both big and small traumas, and these impact relationships and general life functioning. Michele has training in OEI (Observed Experiential Integration), which is a method that integrates traumatic memories into our regular memory, so they no longer trigger intense emotional responses.
Michele has a heart for helping families, and she supports children and their parents in improving communication and their connection as a family. Children process differently than adults so much of her work with children includes play therapy. In addition, Michele implements Emotion Coaching and CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) to help children and their parents learn about feelings, emotion regulation, and the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviour.
When Michele is not working she is most likely spending time with her family. She has been married for over 25 years and has four children ranging from 16-25 years of age. Michele enjoys watching movies, reading novels, playing games, and being near the ocean or a lake. One of her favourite things is sitting on the patio on a summer night with friends and family, and enjoying a wonderful meal and laughter.
